Principal finding

The Normans did not bring ordered government to England. They found it, sat in the chair, ran it harder, valued it and replaced its builders. Chaos is not in the record; colonialism remains arguable. The Department’s operational verdict is hostile acquisition: asset-stripping with cathedrals, and it observes that the cathedrals are very fine.

The dates, battles, statutes, Domesday figures and chronicle quotations are real and referenced; the Sunday Times article and the post that commended it are cited as the prompt. The Department, its Fellow, the Bursar’s feelings about Domesday and the Major’s views on moving are not real, though the last are widely held.
