Principal finding

The United Kingdom should keep the Chagos Archipelago, not because the file says so, but because the College’s rule says the file does not decide, and the people do, and the people have not been asked. The Agreement is a conveyance in which the vendor keeps the freehold and the purchaser pays for the sale; it settles a claim that binds nobody by creating a precedent that will bind everybody; and it was tested at the Porters’ Lodge, where the porter kept the key.

The history, the Agreement and its figures, the judgments and resolutions, the United Kingdom’s declaration at The Hague, the Committee’s decision of December 2025, and the statements of the President, the Prime Minister, ministers, peers, Mauritius and the Chagossian groups are real and referenced; the other side of the argument (Chatham House, the IISS, the Commons Library) is given its room. The Department, its Fellow, the Map Cupboard’s Indian Ocean drawer and the Parish’s claim are not. The Chagossians were wronged by this country and the paper says so in plain words; none of the jokes is about them.
